REC Networks has released the latest version of the Low Power FM (LPFM) Channel Search Tool. This tool is used by prospective licensees of LPFM stations, media activists and others who wish the test the potential for community radio in a particular area.
The new LPFM Search Tool includes the base functionality to support the changes that are being mandated in the Local Community Radio Act of 2010.
REC notes that the results from the new tool do not reflect the current FCC rules that are on record at this time but reflects what would likely be a post-LCRA environment. More changes will take place in the tool once actual service rules are proposed and eventually codifed. A link to the old LPFM Search Tool, which reflects the current rules, is available on the entry page.
Some of the new features in the new tool include:
- A more user friendly entry screen.
- The ability to check LPFM availability from the tower of an existing FM station.
- Advisory messages if a third adjacent channel station exists on a particular available channel where on-air education and possible remediation is required.
- Support for identifying potential channels for a second adjacent waiver. (REC does not do any actual calculations but will refer you to a qualfied consulting engineer).
