Are you ready to change the media landscape in this country? Do you want to start a radio station or know some groups who might? If so, you can help spread the word about community radio! As early as next year, there will be a unique opportunity to apply for thousands of new Low Power FM (LPFM) community radio licenses. These non-commercial stations have the potential to broadcast local news, independent music and arts, and other diverse programming not heard on commercial radio.
Independent media advocates and social justice groups fought for over a decade to expand community radio. This culminated in a huge grassroots legislative victory last year which passed the Local Community Radio Act. Now that we won the opportunity to apply for these licenses we need to spread the word far and wide so community groups know they have this historic chance to seize the airwaves by starting a station.
Radio Summer is an outreach effort for independent media lovers nationwide to lead an event, host a volunteer, hit the road, and spread the word about this amazing opportunity. There are plenty of ways to participate in Radio Summer. Prometheus Radio Project and the People Powered Radio Coalition will provide you with support, including materials, trainings, live webinars, and additional tools to spread the word. Join the Radio Summer team and help amplify community voices across the US!
