01/11 5AM Update: REC's "sub-domains" used for the broadcast database server have been restored. It may take time for the information to propagate through the internet but should be up in the next 24 hours if it isn't up already.
This started late last week when our domain name server (DNS) provider ZoneEdit had a failure of their primary and secondary nameservers. This left REC as well as many other ZoneEdit users out in the cold.
We attempted to move our DNS to our hosting provider HostGator. (our use of ZoneEdit for DNS predates our use of HostGator by several years)
Unfortunately, HostGator, who we have had a great relationship in the past has decided to make some very unusual demands to authenticate our customer information in order to add the A and CNAME records necessary to bring our remote servers back online.
After some persistence from REC, HostGator agreed to complete the work. We understand the security issues around these kind of requests but we feel as a business, they need a better method of verifying customers. This issue does not impact our relationship with HostGator as overall they are a very reliable provider.
REC apologizes to the communities that we serve for our failure to provide these services during this outage. This outage was outside of our control.
